The race known as the Gik evolved on the planet now recognized by the Coalition of Unified Planets as Girmin Prime. This lush, tropical planet was rich with forests, towering evergreens, and fungi. Mountains ranged in various locales across this eternal wilderness where the Gik evolved from deeply spiritual roots, dancing with spirits in the never ending mists. These roots helped them grow for millennia, as any Gik would tell you, until the first blessing fell from the sky. This blessing would forever shape the future of the citizens of Girmin Prime.
Every mind upon this world fractured by languages suddenly united beyond the scope of comprehension, attempting to understand this message from above. It was discovered that in the heart of every collapsed star lies a crystalline material, testing amongst the densest substances in the universe. This crystalline material (later dubbed "Kalthricyte") established worth amongst a previously tribal society, and would become the cornerstone for every facet of Gik "technology" and commerce thereafter. This new material harbingered unification of thought; encompassing philosophy, religion, science, and free enterprise, broadening the horizons of everything the Gik had ever known.
As the Gik evolved over the course of millennia they came to rely upon Kalthricyte, and explored all of its unique merits. Gik Sculptors mastered the art of tuning the crystal fragments and lightening them into devices wide in function. The society of Girmin Prime grew, and as it did, so did the affluence of its people. The Gik blazed forward with discoveries of Kalthricyte harmonics that affected time and space. Now harnessing the energy of celestial bodies, the Gik tuned even the most minute fragment of Kalthricyte to rend the universe itself, allowing instantaneous travel between two points. Implanted shards, tuned to the user himself, made way
for the Theory of Displacement, broadening Gik religion and science even farther. This gift's application in the hands of a Master Sculptor knew no bounds, as even the Kalthricyte itself was granted a will to serve.
These crystal servitors, known as the "Krimok" served for centuries, ever obedient to their uncaring masters until a frightening discovery was made. As they aged, the Krimok "cultured" new crystal, becoming larger in size. The will to serve inspired the will to survive, and the Gik found their world being overrun. Fight as they did, soon the Gik found their home was no longer safe. Overgrown with a crystalline mass choking every leaf on every tree, the surface of Girmin Prime itself became endangered. The following centuries of history upon Girmin Prime chronicled the exodus from the surface, followed by the cleansing of a dying world.
Every shard of Kalthricyte was scoured from the planet into space, with even the massive cities being forced into the skies above. Girmin Prime was given time to heal, but as the Gik would later discover, for their arrogance they would not be welcome on the solid ground of Girmin Prime for centuries to come.
As laws were passed permitting their world to heal, the Gik continued to spread their enterprising ways into the cosmos. Finding new ways to harvest Kalthricyte from the hearts of white dwarfs, the Gik refined their art and swore to make a profit while not repeating the mistakes of their ancestors. Led by the Ugiri they prospered, as entire communities of Gik sprung into existence. They spread, finding other forms of intelligent life peacefully until encountering the Miliari.
In the Miliari's haste for survival a war was declared, and one Ugiri rose above the rest to bring forth the bloodiest era in the history of both races. All of the children of Girmin Prime were brought under thrall, as Gojin'Sha bred enough hatred to ensure that war
would continue to rage for centuries to come. Throughout the time Humans and Miliari developed the relationship that shaped the Coalition, Gojin'Sha dominated his species, worse, perhaps, than any dictator the universe had previously seen. It was not until his assassination that some leaders of Girmin Prime accepted Humanity's offer of peace.
Girmin Prime is recovering slowly, but the Gik do not have centuries to wait. For this reason, the Gik have risked everything with the creation of the Piz'ki'ek. The Gik's desire for slaves led to the devastation of Girmin Prime, yet ironically, this need may save their world from final eradication. Only time will tell, as even the Ugiri cross their scaly fingers.
The Gik stand upon a shattered world devoid of unified leadership, and until quite recently, no one seemed to mind. Having loosely accepted the invitation into the Coalition of Unified planets, the Gik gave only lip service until settlements began being lost to the Ji. Since there was no remaining supreme authority over the Gik (nor any serious communication between factions), no one seemed to notice that millions of lives were being lost across dozens of colonies throughout the cosmos. As much as they may not care to admit it, the Gik are waning now, seeking equilibrium between freedom and survival.
